Not sure a rake would get through northern ice. I used to use a 7lb hammer head for light stuff or a 14lb hammer head for the 'coat off' days.
Funniest thing I heard of was a lad on the canal who walked out on the ice with a chain saw and cut a channel bank to bank in about 6 pegs. While they were setting up the ice fractured at the bank and pushed one way and closed 4 of the pegs up again!

Mainly for the ice breaking Rick. Lob the weight out so it punches through the ice. Then pull on the rope until the chain comes through the ice. Use the weight and chain to saw through the ice all the way back. Cut 2 parallel lines then break across the far end. Carefully use your pole or landing net to slide the ice underneath the edges or net it if you can reach.
