Joker

Keeping and Preparation

By

Gary Plant

Empty the contents of the net onto the riddle and spread it out using the majority of the space available. The bait will start to work its way through the riddle very quickly and into the tray.

After 4 minutes or so, this is what is left on the riddle. As you can see it's mainly dead stuff or skins. All the live joker has swam through into the tray beneath. The waste can then be disposed of. If more water or a lot more joker had have been added to the riddle or tray then the riddling process would have  slowed down considerably. The next step is to fill the aquarium again with fresh water, drain off the joker as before into the net, and then transfer it.

The aerator that I use is a single pump with an air stone attached. The air stone causes the water to bubble therefore oxygenating it. I generally riddle the joker two or three times per week depending upon temperature and water colour. If the water starts to go dark and turn red, this generally means  there is dead stuff in the tank and it has bled. Time to riddle this out and give them some fresh water. When you need the bait for a match, drain the joker as before, but wring the net to get rid off any excess water and empty the contents back into some clean newspaper and you are ready to go. So there you have it a basic guide to keeping joker.

rescue tip

When the weather starts to warm the joker will hatch very quickly, generally after 5 days or so. Slow the process down by adding frozen ice packs to the water to cool the temperature.
