Well it's time to put pen to paper once
again and tell you about Harrow postals latest excursion, I must admit to
being out of the scene for a couple of weeks due to a hospital visit so to
say I was looking forward to this match is an understatement, the match
was actually a challenge match between Fishermans cabin and Harrow Postal,
now this is an annual match and has been running for about three years.
However to say the cabin like to win is an understatement, having resorted
to recruiting match stars like Dickie Carr and Roger Tester in the past to
swing the odds in there favour, however this year Dickie could not attend
due to being in with a shout in the teams of three at gold valley. This
year surely we would be in with a chance of revenge. (having been beaten
in the two previous years)
My
own record in this event had been good winning the first match at Lake
john and seeing off Dickie at the next peg, and winning my section the
year after again seeing off Dickie at the next peg although to say that
on both matches fortune smiled on the brave is rather an understatement,
however I digress last years match had been won with 170lb by the aerator,
in actual fact I had been so impressed with this boundary that I returned
a week later to fish it with my good friend John Cook we fished both sides
of the aerator and John counted my carp with me, which totalled 100 first
one going 9lb 8oz to big wag an pellet, although other methods
employed were waggler and bagging wag,Now in addition to the carp there
are stacks of roach in this boundary up to a reputed 4lb,one of the lads
who fishes for the cabin had one over 3lb and a couple of just over 2
pound have also come out, although on the match last year the roach
averaged anywhere from 4oz to a pound, good caster roach. Silver fish
matches on this boundary have been won with 50lb.
Anyway after a good breakfast and being picked up by my best mate and
pools partner Steve Groves we drove to the boundary, now those of you who
don't know crowthorne, it is near reading and the drive to the boundary
can be a bit fraught as you have to drive through a forge to get to the
boundary, anyway luck was in as it hadn't rained for some time so the
water only came up to just below the door sills.(there is another way in
to avoid the forge but we have been too lazy to sort it, anyway we like
the excitement and the sound of steam!!). However when driving through the
lovely Berkshire countryside we noticed that there had been quite a hard
frost, so the seeds of doubt on how the fishery would fish had been sown.
On arrival on the boundary and parking the car in the car park which faces
the Dam wall we decided to have a quick look at the boundary, there were a
few carp crashing on the surface and by a bush on the Dam wall there
looked to be a few carp spawning as the bush would shake violently every
now and again with the activity, there was also a mist over the ressy
which I hoped had given it a bit of protection from the
frost.
Anyway, one by one the lads arrived, with £15 pools and ticket and two
teams of twelve the draw was eagerly awaited, John Brennan (harrow) had
drawn for our team and Steve Brown, Owner and proprietor of fishermans
cabin had drawn for the opposition, our team had drawn the odd numbers
which suited us as the favoured side of the " flyer" aerator was peg
7,anyway I was sorting out my gear when Steve called over to me to come an
draw, having drawn, I eagerly opened the ticket praying for peg 7 but as
usual I was a million miles away from the flyer peg, having drawn peg 19,
still Steve Groves came over opened his ticket and lo an behold peg 7 so
at least I would get a share of some pools money after all! Anyway the
lads were great an carried all me gear to the far side by crap corner,
and I had some great lads either side of me, to be fair the really bad
pegs in the corner hadn't been pegged and we were just out of the corner,
to put it in perspective the pegs in the corner can produce over 30lbs of
roach and a few carp do frequent the area but not enough to win under
normal circumstances.
